Full Moon SUP Yoga at North Avenue Beach
The full moon can represent completions, endings, and letting go. The light of the full moon can help illuminate the things that are holding us back and preventing us from moving forward - in life, our careers, or in our yoga practice! What better place for a yoga flow than under the full moon. That's exactly what I did last night and it was pretty amazing.
Chicago SUP offers weekly SUP yoga classes during the summer along with full moon SUP yoga flows. It's taken me all summer to sign up for an SUP yoga class, so I thought - what better time than under the full moon? I was right - it reminded me how much I love merging my love of yoga with SUP. The water was calm and the quiet beach illuminated by the full moon was incredible.
I brought my own inflatable paddle board because I need to practice on my own board! The set up for SUP yoga is very favorable for any yogi - beginner or advanced. A floating rope is set up in a shallow area of the water anchored on each end in a direction based on the winds. Carabiners can be found on the rope every few feet to attach the SUP boards. Once all our boards were attached and in line, we were all set for class!
Our Chicago SUP instructor began class with some cleansing breaths and gentle stretches. I've only done SUP yoga a few times and that was years ago, so it was great to learn some new poses. I do yoga poses on my paddle board when I'm out by myself, but this was an entire flow of poses favorable for SUP yoga. The instruction was great and anyone - even if you've never done yoga before - could take part in this class! Yoga is a little different on a paddle board than in a studio and simple poses can become quite complex when you are balancing on the water!
Since the completion of my yoga teacher training, I've been contemplating whether or not I should get SUP yoga certified and last night reminded me why - I absolutely love it! I've decided to move forward with SUP yoga certification and hopefully, I'll be ready to teach classes next summer. In the meantime, you'll find me back out at North Avenue Beach for the next class with Chicago SUP - come with me!
