Winter SUP
It’s snowing in Chicago, but that doesn’t stop those of us that love stand up paddle boarding from hitting the water. In fact, it makes it even better. Paddling through snow is surreal, peaceful, beautiful and sparks a sense of adventure.
The Chi SUP Club, facilitated by Kirsten Lefeldt on Facebook, schedules social paddles throughout the year and no matter the season. The winter warrior event was scheduled for this morning and the snowy forecast didn’t stop us.
We all met at the Lincoln Park Boat Club with our winter gear - dry suits, gloves, boots, and hats. We launched into the South Lagoon and paddled towards Diversey Harbor with the intentions of exploring Lake Michigan. I was a little late to arrive and caught up with the group as they were coming in from attempting Lake Michigan - it was too choppy today. One of our paddle boarders even fell in the water! Another reason it’s so important to be prepared and wear winter gear to keep you safe. We paddled back to the south end of the lagoon and then to the boat club.
It’s tough getting out of bed on a snowy morning to paddle outside, but I’m always glad I did when finished. It makes me feel like I’m defeating winter a bit and enjoying it’s beauty. Look for me on the Chicago River soon - my favorite winter paddling spot!
